The Park and the animals

Parks in Florida, there's more than meets the eye.

The Gopher Tortoise is native to the southeastern United States. The gopher tortoise is seen as a keystone species because it digs burrows that provide shelter for at least 360 other animal species.

The gopher tortoise is one of five North American tortoise species and is the only tortoise naturally found east of the Mississippi River.

Florida law prohibits any person from killing or wounding gopher tortoises, which are considered “threatened” in the state of Florida. Violating the law is a third-degree felony and punishable by up to five years in prison, a $5,000 fine or both.
