The Wall Underground

Tunnels under the Walls of Maastricht

*way back when King Louis the XIV of France was attacking the city and tried to breach the outer walls.  [King Louis reign was the longest in world history. In fact, his contemporaries thought the Sun King to be immortal. But in the summer of 1715, Louis XIV finally met his fate and died at the age of 76 in his architectural masterpiece: the Chateau of Versailles.]  The Dutch Army had created 14ml of tunnels under the city to store munitions and be able to attack from any vantage point.  I don't think we walked all 14 miles, but it seemed like it.

One of the 3 separate map rooms showing battle strategy and tunnel locations.

Finally the stairway up and out.  Several city blocks from the entrance.

I walked hunched over, squatting for over an hour as we stumbled along in the dark.  It was VERY interesting, and I only bumped my head once!
